About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Lahaina, Mauka Makai offers a vibrant breakfast experience that beautifully melds local Hawaiian flavors with sophisticated culinary creativity. This charming breakfast restaurant at 45 Kai Malina Pkwy serves dishes that feel both fresh and thoughtfully crafted, making it a must-visit spot for anyone craving a flavorful start to their day with an unbeatable ocean view.

The menu shines with inventive small plates such as the Avocado & Kaua'i Prawn Bruschetta—a gluten-free delight where farm-raised prawns harmonize with grapefruit, cilantro, watercress, creamy avocado, and a kick of spicy aioli, topped with cotija cheese. The contrast of bright, zesty elements with succulent prawns delivers a punch of nutrition and taste that excites the palate. Another standout is the Pork and ‘Ahi dish, featuring crispy pork paired with shichimi-seared ‘ahi tuna, amplified by Maui onion jam, yamasa caramel, and a sweet-spicy sriracha honey drizzle—each bite unlocking layers of umami with a tantalizing balance of sweet heat.

To complement the food, Mauka Makai boasts an artfully curated beverage list. Their craft cocktails are true showstoppers, especially the signature Mauka Makai Mai Tai, which combines old Lahaina rums, orange curacao, and fresh-squeezed pineapple and lime, gently smoked over kiawe wood for a subtle depth that transports you straight to the islands. For beer lovers, local brews like Pineapple Mana Wheat and Coconut Porter from Maui Brewing Co. provide a refreshing, authentic taste of the island craft scene.

Many diners rave not only about the food but also the inviting atmosphere. Customers appreciate the spacious, thoughtfully arranged tables that offer privacy without sacrificing the warm, communal vibe. The panoramic ocean views add a serene backdrop, enhancing the calming and indulgent breakfast experience. Service is frequently praised as friendly and attentive, with staff who are knowledgeable and eager to enrich your visit by sharing local secrets—like where to find the best malasadas on Maui.

Families find Mauka Makai particularly accommodating, as reflected in glowing reviews highlighting the kid-friendly menu options, which are straightforward yet satisfying for younger palates. The seamless service during busy mornings and the genuine aloha spirit infused by the staff create a comfortable environment for groups large and small alike.

While some guests note that portions can feel modest compared to the price, the consensus leans towards valuing the caliber of ingredients, the chef’s evident artistry, and the overall elevated breakfast setting. The restaurant clearly stands apart from more casual local joints, offering a refined yet approachable dining option that honors Hawaiian culinary traditions while inviting innovation.

Ultimately, Mauka Makai is a sublime spot where the richness of Maui’s produce and coastal bounty meets expert preparation and heartfelt hospitality. Whether you're indulging in their exquisite small plates, sipping on one of their expertly crafted cocktails, or simply soaking in the spectacular ocean vistas as you enjoy breakfast, Mauka Makai leaves a lasting impression that lingers like the warm island breeze.

Very good breakfast with a view. We enjoyed the French toast and smoked salmon bowl. The staff was friendly and helpful. Gave us a tip on where to get the best malasadas in Maui.

Right there at Nanea, nicer dining environment than Auntie's Kitchen or Pailolo. Thursday night is their ribeye special.

Breakfast for 8 was easy here. Wait was minimal, service was quick and the food was great! The best part was the kids having their own menu that was basic and traditional, nothing over the top that overwhelmed the picky eaters. Views are great and the tables are properly spread apart to avoid bumping into each other and the staff. Prices are relevant to any local breakfast joint but better than your average resort price. You can enjoy mimosas as early as 7am which was a great starter for the day! Room charge was the easiest option for us.

Excellent breakfast and a great view of the ocean. They have a chef it seems, when Covid hit Hawaii most chef’s left the restaurants and replaced with line cooks. Also excellent service, prices but that Maui

I absolutely love my Sundays off. What made it even better was an impromptu text I got asking if I wanted to do brunch with part of my gang. Oh yes, please! ATMOSPHERE: Located within the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, the open-air space is the hotel's sole restaurant. Every table has a view of either the hotel grounds, pool or ocean. Live music serenaded us throughout our brunch. The vibe was relaxing, cool and laid back. BRUNCH: To start off, mimosas were available in four flavors - orange, pineapple, guava and passion-orange-guava (POG). My friend and I had infinite amounts of the guava version which had the perfect sparkling wine to juice ratio and got us very relaxed. For the buffet, I started off with king crab legs as I wanted to get down and dirty before having breakfast selections. The crab legs were chilled and tasted fresh. They're not pre-cracked so you have some work to do! Cocktail sauce was available but I ate them plain as they had a perfect amount of salt flavor. I had a couple pieces of tako pokē as well, which were surprisingly good with a firm texture and nice amount of seasoning. The scrambled eggs were the only disappointment as they were gritty, possibly due to being actual Egg Beaters or mixed with it. The broiled salmon with Hamakua mushrooms was really moist and tasty, covered in a fresh garlic/oyster sauce mixture. Sides of Portuguese sausage, bacon and fingerling potatoes were good. Other selections available that I didn't have were locally-grown and organic salads and cheeses, prime rib, breads, fruits and desserts. TIP: Unfortunately there was no omelette station and the only reason why this review isn't five stars. SERVICE: Hostess greeting was immediate, professional and friendly. Servers took excellent care of us. Our mimosas were constantly refilled and we were checked on throughout our experience. And best of all, we never felt rushed out and stayed till closing time at 2pm. OVERALL: Chill ambiance, good food and service equals a definite return.
